Cash amounting to Rs 39,000 and other valuables were stolen from a car parked near Inox theatre in the city on Sunday between 8 pm and
11 pm.
The culprits used a screwdriver to break the right side window glass of the car, police said.
Police have registered an offence under section 427 and 379 of Indian Penal Code on a complaint of car owner Saurabh Dhuri from Caranzalem.
Such incidents of stealing belongings and cash from cars have often occurred in the Panaji area.
Two more incidents of breaking the window glass of cars were reported in the last three months within Panaji police station jurisdiction.
In the last week of May, gold ornaments valued at several lakhs of rupees were stolen from a car parked along the road at Miramar beach.
There was a similar type of robbery in June when valuable mobiles and cash was stolen from a car parked in the Campal area.
During that time the complainants had suspected some children of migrants living in the area to be the culprits but later on police had to release them as there was no direct evidence against them and under the law the kids could not be interrogated.
Many car owners sometimes don’t register the offense. The complainant Dhuri has however contended that the attitude of Panaji police towards investigating a car breaking offense was casual.
He said, the police did not confiscate the screwdriver used to break the glass which was thrown near the car. No fingerprints were taken from the car either.
